Scientific Gem Testing Laboratory (SGTL)

Established in 1980 and based in Melbourne, SGTL produces AUSCERT diamond certificates.

Awards and Memberships

SGTL is a member of the JAA, and, was recently awarded government grant for business development.

Focus on Cut

Somewhat controversially, SGTL only certify diamonds with the best cut (make). This eliminates poorly cut diamonds certified by them, possibly earning them a reputation for "tough grading", but also produces certificates for only the best cut diamonds.

As only diamonds with the best make are certified, there are four cut grades on an AUSCERT certificate:

• Ideal


• Excellent


• Very Good


• Good

All other stones are refused certification.
