About three weeks ago, we changed domains from www.diamondsandopals.com to www.jogiadiamonds.com.au.
For quite a while now, we’ve questioned whether or not www.diamondsandopals.com was really right for our company.
In 1998, when we first started online, we sold a range of diamond and opal jewellery. The reason why we chose “diamondsandopals.com” were two fold:
- Even though .com.au domains were free (from memory), hosting was enormously expensive, with a host like iiNet charging between $400 and $600 per year. However, US hosting was a lot cheaper, but for some strange reason, they refused to host .com.au domains.
- Generic domain names were all the rage. Domains such as pets.com were at the height of their success, and we wanted to cash in on this domain “land rush”.
In 2000, we registered jogiadiamonds.com.au, and up until 2006, we ran the two sites simultaneously. In mid-2006 however, we started re-directing jogiadiamonds.com.au to our main site, www.diamondsandopals.com.
Over the years, many people have inquired whether or not we sell opals, and a lot of people we confused as to who we actually were – were we “Diamonds and Opals” or “Jogia Diamonds International”? Furthermore, many thought that the .com address meant we were American.
So after months of thinking, deciding and planning, we moved our site to www.jogiadiamonds.com.au, 301 redirect-ing all our pages to the corresponding page on our new domain, allowing those who bookmarked our pages easy access to our new domain.
So far, the response has been extremely positive, with a few customers already noticing the change and congratulating us on it.
