In Ideal-Scope images of round brilliant cut diamonds, it’s common to see 8 black arrows amongst a sea of red.
These black arrows are caused by light being reflected at such an angle that your head obstructs it, causing darkness. However, these black arrows provide contrast which in turn make the diamond more brilliant.
However, as seen below, when a person’s head is replaced by a fluorescent light, then intense flashes of light replace the black arrows, as seen below.
